    About Marsden

Marsden is a large but compact village very close to Uppermill over in West Yorkshire – God’s Own Country. It’s the next stop on the Greenfield to Huddersfield railway line and about 15 minutes away by car. You can even walk there over the Pennines in a couple of hours, it’s a splendid hike.

Marsden has a similar history to Uppermill in that it grew in size and prospered in the 19th Century through the production of woollen cloth and was home to a sizeable Woollen mill. Like Uppermill, Marsden is located on a waterway, and the River Colne which runs through the centre of the village would have powered the mills. Many of the houses in Marsden were originally built to house the workers at the mills, and they were built in the iconic Yorkshire sandstone.

The Huddersfield Narrow Canal opened in 1811 to transport cotton and woollen goods from the Saddleworth side of the Pennines to Yorkshire. The three-and-a-quarter-mile Standedge tunnel that was carved through the hills is the longest canal tunnel in the UK, and it arrives in Yorkshire right next to Marsden. You can visit the Standedge Tunnel visitors centre to learn more about the industrial history of the region and the importance of the canal and tunnel. You can even take a trip down the tunnel on a canal barge.

Marsden is located in the Colne Valley at the confluence of the River Colne and the Wessenden Brook, and there are excellent walking opportunities in the area, though the ‘Dark Peak’ as this section of the Peak District is known, is more rugged and challenging than the moors of Saddleworth. There are several reservoirs in the area, and they are well worth the effort to reach. There are also more gentle and relaxing walks around Marsden.

Marsden is home to many locally owned cafes, bars, restaurants and speciality food shops selling high quality locally produced and sourced foods. The Riverhead Brewery Tap on Peel Street pours Riverhead’s own ales alongside beers from Ossett and SALT, and their Butterley Bitter is so beautiful it’s worth a trip over the hill just for a pint. The award-winning Olive Branch restaurant is one of the best in the region, and a few miles down the Colne Valley at Linthwaite, Titanic Spa is a stunning and luxurious spa and hotel situated in an old renovated woollen mill.

The Marsden Jazz festival held every year in October is one of the longest-running jazz festivals in the UK. They will be hosting the 2026 festival between the 9th and 11th of October. It is a truly fabulous weekend of music and fun and is a festival that never takes itself too seriously despite having a roll call of some of the best Jazz musicians in the country.

No introduction to Marsden would be complete without mention of Simon Armitage. The award-winning local poet mainly writes gritty poems about Yorkshire life and Yorkshire people, often sad, but always with a hint of dry humour. He has written numerous books, and if you’ve not read his poetry, you should definitely try it out. His autobiographical book ‘All Points North’ tells the story of his growing up in Marsden and is a fascinating read. He has been Poet Laureate since 2019, which isn’t bad for an ex-probation officer and poet from Yorkshire.

More information about Marsden and the surrounding area can be found at the tourist information site.

  • Gluten Free in Uppermill and Saddleworth

Gluten Free in Uppermill and Saddleworth

These cafés, pubs, restaurants and chip shops in and around Saddleworth offer gluten-free food, all within about 25 minutes’ drive of the cottage. Each one is backed by a current menu, the venue’s own website or recent reviews from coeliac diners, and each has a food hygiene rating of 3 or above. Menus, owners and kitchen practices change, so please ring ahead, especially if you need food prepared away from gluten.

If you have coeliac disease: a gluten-free dish is not the same as a coeliac-safe kitchen. Always tell staff, and ask whether fried food shares oil with battered items and how toasters, boards and pizza ovens are kept separate. Where a place below says it has a dedicated fryer, that is what the venue itself states.

    In Uppermill (walkable)

    • The Waggon, High Street: a separate gluten-free menu, including gluten-free Sunday lunch. The menu notes that the kitchen itself is not gluten-free.
    • Muse, 23 High Street: small plates and cocktails. Coeliac diners report gluten-free dishes marked on the menu and knowledgeable staff.
    • Sorella, 38 High Street: an Italian restaurant where coeliac diners report that the pizza and pasta can be made gluten-free, with a separate pot and water for gluten-free pasta. Tell them when you book.
    • Caffè Grande Abaco, High Street: allergens are marked on the menu, and toasties and sandwiches can be made on gluten-free bread. Dogs welcome.
    • Saints, St Mary’s Gate: a café with gluten-free sandwiches and toasties, which staff say are prepared separately.

    Elsewhere in Saddleworth

    • The Kingfisher, Greenfield: a family pub whose menu marks dishes made with no gluten-containing ingredients. Food is prepared in a shared kitchen. Dogs welcome.
    • The Navigation Inn, Dobcross: gluten-free dishes are marked on the menu, including fish and chips and a cheese and onion pie, and there are gluten-free beers. Coeliac diners have reviewed it well this year.
    • The Loading Bay, Sam Road, Diggle: a brunch café. Dishes that can be made gluten-free are marked on the menu, and gluten-free bread is available.
    • The Old Bell Inn, Delph: dishes are marked gluten-free on the brasserie menu, and some others can be made gluten-free on request.
    • The White Hart, Lydgate: dishes suitable for coeliacs are marked on the menu, and gluten-free bread and gluten-free battered haddock are available.
    • The Huntsman Inn, on the moors road from Greenfield towards Holmfirth: the menu marks dishes made with no gluten-containing ingredients and those that can be made without gluten. Dogs welcome.

    A short drive away

    Oldham

    • The Roebuck Inn, Strinesdale: a gluten-free menu. Fried items share a fryer, and the menu marks them.
    • Molino Lounge, Old Town Hall, Oldham: a café-bar with a full gluten-free menu.
    • Nando’s, Old Town Hall and Elk Mill: Coeliac Sanctuary reports that Nando’s chips are cooked separately. Check the allergen information on Nando’s online menu and tell staff when you order.

    Mossley, Stalybridge and Ashton-under-Lyne

    • The Chippy, Arundel Street, Mossley: gluten-free battered fish and gluten-free sausages, cooked in a separate fryer.
    • SK15 Bar & Bistro, Market Street, Stalybridge: staff ask about allergies, and a diner this year was handed an allergen chart for the menu.
    • Nando’s, Ashton Moss leisure park: as above.

    Littleborough and Hollingworth Lake

    • The Waterside, Inghams Lane, by Hollingworth Lake: a bar and restaurant that says it has an extensive range of gluten-free dishes. Ask staff what’s available.

    Marsden

    • The Olive Branch Inn, Manchester Road: an inn where a gluten-free diner this year praised the staff’s knowledge of gluten-free options.

    Huddersfield and Holmfirth

    • Apadana, Viaduct Street, Huddersfield: a Persian restaurant with a large gluten-free menu and a separate fryer.
    • The Café at Totties, near Holmfirth: gluten-free options across the menu, and the café says it always has gluten-free cake. Dogs allowed in the conservatory and on the terrace.
    • The Carding Shed, Washpit Mills, Holmfirth: a daytime café in an old mill, alongside a garage. Recent reviewers say it catered well for gluten-free diners and had gluten-free cakes.

    Glossop

    • Pico Lounge, Howard Town Shopping Park: a café-bar with a full gluten-free menu.
    • La Corrente, Howard Town Shopping Park: an Italian restaurant with its own gluten-free menu, including pizza and pasta.

Gluten-free bakes and shops for self-catering

The cottage has a full kitchen, so cooking for yourself is often the easiest and safest option.

    • Simply GF Cakes & Bakes, Norden, Rochdale: a small home bakery making only gluten-free cakes, pies, quiches and bakes to order, for local delivery or collection. Message them well before your stay.
    • Tesco Greenfield, Chew Valley Road: the nearest large supermarket, with a Free From range.
    • Co-op, Uppermill High Street: Co-op has its own gluten-free range, though it’s a small store, so don’t count on every line being in stock.

If you know a good gluten-free bakery or deli closer to Uppermill, please tell us so we can add it. For everywhere else to eat in the village, see eating and drinking in Uppermill.

  • Artists and Art Galleries in Saddleworth

    UPPERMILL

The Saddleworth Museum and Gallery on the High Street is open every day from 1pm to 4pm (though the art gallery itself is closed until November 2026, so do check before you visit).  They’re in a wonderful location on the canal and have a super gallery collection that tells the story of Saddleworth through the eyes of Saddleworthians. They have regular exhibitions of artwork by amateur and professional local and nationally acclaimed artists. The details of their art exhibitions can be found here.

They also have a decent shop that sells local hand-crafted items, many with a Saddleworth theme, alongside toys, DVDs, cards, souvenir items, jewellery, maps, walking guides, and books about Saddleworth. One great resource available at the museum is their archive that contains photographs, deeds, wills, census returns and Parish records dating back as far as the late 1500s.

They also have the nicest toilets in the village (20p a go if you are not visiting the museum) and the friendly and helpful staff are great sources of local knowledge.

The Millyard Gallery was established in 1985 and it is in Uppermill.  This deceptively spacious fine-art gallery situated across two floors has developed a reputation as one of the leading galleries in the North West. They specialise in original artwork by established and emerging artists, and they supply limited edition silkscreen prints by artists from the Royal Academy of Arts. The Gallery has two major exhibitions annually, with constantly changing artwork throughout the year.

They also have displays of ceramics, jewellery and designer homeware for sale. The Gallery also houses Saddleworth Picture Framing, a high quality, bespoke framing service.

    DELPH

The Gallery Down the Stairs is hidden away below Saddleworth Crafts Centre in Delph. They generally open at weekends (Saturday 10am to 4pm and Sunday 1pm to 4pm), but it’s worthwhile checking in advance before visiting. They present the artwork of local artist Richard Clare, famous for his wonderful Saddleworth Daily Sketches series and have a collection of oil paintings by Joyce Parfitt. Pop in for a chat and a glass of wine or a coffee!

John McCombs Gallery on the high street in Delph showed a collection of works by local artist John McCombs, who sadly died in January 2025. He focused mainly on the Saddleworth landscape and developed a comprehensive visual record of the area in and around the village of Delph. He also painted beautiful figure paintings, with many iconic Saddleworth characters captured such as the Saddleworth Morris Men and Brass band members. The gallery has since closed.

    FURTHER AFIELD

The Holmfirth Artweek exhibition held in Holmfirth every year is one of the largest open art exhibitions in the UK. The exhibition is traditionally held over a week in July, and the 2027 event runs from Sunday 4th to Saturday 10th July. In 2027 there won’t be a main exhibition at the Civic Hall; the week will focus on the Fringe venues instead.

The main exhibition is held in the Holmfirth Civic Hall but exhibitions are also held at over 40 Fringe venues across the Holme Valley, Colne Valley, and Saddleworth area,  fringe venues that took part in artweek in Saddleworth in 2019 are Scona in Greenfield, Millyard Gallery and the Weavers Factory in Uppermill.

    LOCAL ARTISTS

Chris Cyprus is a local artist based at Woodend Mill in Mossley; his paintings of Saddleworth and Greater Manchester are unique and very much sought after.

Ashley Jackson is a celebrated artist and one of the country’s leading and most successful landscape watercolourists. He is famous for his paintings of the area around Holmfirth where his studio is located.

Angela Tate-Wright is a local photographer who presents a unique vision of Saddleworth and the surrounding area through her atmospheric photography.

  • About Uppermill

    About Uppermill

A recent article in the Manchester Evening News suggested that Uppermill was becoming a “home to hillside hipsters.”

Although the term ‘hipster’ is used mainly by people (who’ve read it on the back of a muesli packet) to refer to anything remotely trendy, there has been something of a renaissance occurring in Uppermill in the last few years, though Camden it is not. I don’t believe there are any plans to open a cereal bar on the High Street anytime soon, but there are a lot of beards knocking about the area, so that might have something to do with the misattribution.

With art galleries, craft and boutique shops, cafes, restaurants, and trendy bars popping up all over the village, there certainly is a buzz about the place. If you haven’t been to Uppermill for a few years, you will definitely notice the difference.

Uppermill is the largest of the thirteen villages that make up Saddleworth and is conveniently located equidistant between Manchester and Huddersfield. Before the industrial revolution, Uppermill and the communities of Saddleworth were primarily occupied in pastoral agriculture and small scale domestic weaving. The 18th-century three-storey weavers’ cottages built from locally quarried stone with their distinctive mullioned windows can be seen throughout the village. The large water-powered mills built along the   River Tame, that superseded the weavers cottages are mainly gone,  and those that remain have mainly been converted into accommodation.

The Huddersfield Narrow Canal, which opened in 1811 to carry textiles across the Pennines, passes through the village, going under the impressive Victorian viaduct at the northern end before disappearing into the hills at the Standedge Tunnel. In the summer you can take a trip down the canal on the little blue boat or you can take a stroll along the canal, stopping off for a pot of tea at the Limekiln Cafe, or for an ice-cream at Grandpa Greene’s Ice Cream Parlour in Diggle.

Regardless of the apparent gentrification of the High street, as one of the villages involved in the traditional Whit Friday Band contest and Rush cart celebrations, Uppermill has managed to retain its close links to the traditions of Saddleworth. Once a part of Yorkshire before the boundary was moved (over 50 years ago, in 1974), white rose plaques still adorn many of the buildings in the village, signifying Saddleworth’s close relationship to the county over t’hill. On August 1st (Yorkshire day) a ceremonial reading of the Yorkshire “Declaration of Integrity” is carried out in the village by members of the White Rose society.

There is a thriving eating and drinking scene in Uppermill, with cafes, bars, restaurants and traditional local pubs to suit all tastes. There is also a good number of small craft and boutique shops selling locally produced products.

Despite the presence of a huge, recently built Tesco supermarket in the next village, there are still a number of independent shops selling locally sourced fresh food products, including two butchers, a baker, a greengrocer, a cheesemonger and a wine merchant with a deli counter. See our shopping in Uppermill guide for the details.

There is still an independent DIY store (you don’t see many of those these days) housed in the beautiful old co-op building on the High street. There are also all the other amenities you could imagine ever needing including a Post Office, a library and a children’s playground. For some reason that I cannot get to the bottom of, despite the plethora of gas-guzzling 4x4s in the area, there is no petrol station in the whole of Saddleworth.

Uppermill is within easy access to the Saddleworth Moors and Peak District, and there are a multitude of magnificent walks around the area, ranging from a gentle stroll to a challenging uphill slog.  The beautiful Dovestone Reservoir is located a few minutes away by car, and the war memorial and Pots and Pans stone at the top of the hill keep an eye on everything in the valley below.

Greenfield station is a 15 to 20-minute walk from the centre of Uppermill, and has hourly trains heading to Manchester or Yorkshire. The M62 passes through Saddleworth Moor not far away, and junction 22 is 1,221 feet above sea level, making it the highest motorway in the country (though get off at junction 21 for Saddleworth).

Saddleworth Museum (open 1pm – 4pm) on the High Street has a collection of displays that explain the history of Uppermill and Saddleworth; they also act as the focal point for tourist information.

  • Weather in Saddleworth

    Weather in Saddleworth

If you are coming to stay at Pots & Pans in the depths of winter, then it is more than likely that you will experience some snow or ice. Pots & Pans Cottage is located about 700 feet above sea level,  which is high enough that sometimes the cottage is covered in snow when there is not as much as a snowflake in the village.  We do provide a grit bin at the cottage in case the paths need making safe, and the wood-burning stove in the lounge can quickly warm even the coldest toes!

If you are visiting Saddleworth in the summer, then fear not. Saddleworth in the sunshine is the greatest place in the world! Our garden and the decked area is peaceful and quiet, and perfect for enjoying the long summer evenings.

In late February, early March 2018 the snowstorm labelled the “Beast from the East” hit the UK and caused major disruptions. Saddleworth was severely affected and many of the roads were closed for a number of days. People even slept in their cars up at Windy Hill at junction 22 on the M62. At 1,221 feet above sea level, it is the highest motorway in the country and gets pretty bleak in the winter.

Some of our guests were snowed in at the cottage for a couple of days during this time. They said that they’d had a lovely stay with lots of “long wintry walks” (they gave us a five-star review!)  but they very much appreciated the cosy wood-burning stove in the lounge.

If you do find yourself visiting Saddleworth during the snow, please stay safe, and warm, and don’t take risks on the roads. There are several Facebook groups and local newspapers online,  and the Oldham Council website and Twitter feed @oldhamcouncil provide local information and updates on the status of the roads.

I hope that if you do book to stay at Pots & Pans Cottage during the snow, that you get to enjoy it. Saddleworth in the snow is absolutely magical, and Caffè Grande Abaco in the village does the most amazing hot chocolate if you fancy a trip out!

  • Bringing Dogs to the Cottage

    Bringing Dogs to the Cottage

Pots & Pans Cottage is a dog-friendly cottage, and well-behaved dogs are very welcome to stay. We charge a £20 fee for dogs, which covers any additional cleaning required. All we ask is that you don’t allow your dogs to sit on the furniture or beds. The garden of the cottage is not secure, therefore inquisitive dogs shouldn’t be left outside unattended. The cottage is, however, perfectly located to access plenty of dog walking opportunities around Uppermill and Saddleworth.

With miles of moorland and a plethora of pathways upon which to perambulate, Saddleworth is the perfect place to bring your dogs on holiday.

dogs can stay at Pots & Pans Cottage

Dogs are an integral part of life in Saddleworth and many pubs and cafés in the area welcome dogs.

Two fabulous local pubs that are in easy walking distance of the cottage and that welcome dogs are the Cross Keys and the Church Inn, they have lovely outdoor seating areas with fabulous views. The White Hart at Lydgate (pictured) is also dog-friendly, it’s a little further away (1-hour walk, or 10 minutes’ drive) but it is a great pub and worth a visit.

Dogs at the White Hart Inn

Two lovely local cafes that welcome dogs are the Limekiln Cafe on the canal in Uppermill and Grandpa Greene’s Ice Cream Parlour on the canal in Diggle. Grandpa Greene’s have two large dog-friendly terraces which are fully heated & covered; they even have a dog menu!

If you are out and about in Saddleworth with your dog, please keep them on a lead, especially if you are taking public footpaths across farmland where sheep are present. You will see plenty of sheep in the hills up above the cottage and at Dovestones Reservoir. Even if your dog is normally calm and obedient they should not be allowed to run loose around livestock. Every year sheep are killed, injured and miscarry after being chased or attacked by normally placid dogs.

keep dogs on a lead at lambing time

Please be aware that during lambing season if you are out and about with your dog in the fields around Saddleworth please make sure to keep your dogs on a lead and take extra care when using public footpaths across farmland.

    Thanks!

There is one pet shop in Uppermill: Village Pets is at 4 Court Street,  Uppermill, near the Co-op. (01457 872612) Open: 8.30am – 5.30pm (10.30am – 4.00pm Sundays).

The local Vet is  Medivet Uppermill at 5 Saddleworth House, Tame Street, Uppermill, 01457 870405. Opening hours change, so please check their website before you go.

Below are some links to interesting walks that are not too challenging, and are perfect to take dogs exploring around Uppermill and the surrounding area.

Visit Oldham has a handy map of a circular route of the Uppermill Trail that takes in many of the interesting sites in the village.

Saddleworth Parish Council have a number of excellent walks explained on their website, these are taken from the excellent local book Saddleworth Discovery Walks which is available to buy here.

Walking Britain has a moderately challenging but very rewarding 4.5-mile walk that takes you up to Pots and Pans. This is one of the most popular walks in Saddleworth and is very rewarding for the Saddleworth views from the top.

The dog-walking website Walkiees has a number of easy Saddleworth walks including a 4.5-mile walk that takes you around the old Roman area of Castleshaw.

Visit Oldham has a map and some information on walking around Dovestones Reservoir in Greenfield. It is an easy walk of about 2.5 miles (4 km) in breathtaking surroundings. Be warned, Dovestone reservoir can get very busy, especially at weekends. If you really want to visit Dovestone, I’d recommend going very early in the morning.

  • The Story of the Pots and Pans Stone

The Story of the Pots and Pans Stone

You might think that Pots & Pans Cottage is an unusual name for a relaxing and cosy self-catering holiday cottage, and perhaps you are right.  We are not, as you may imagine, named after our well-appointed kitchen (although we do have a super collection of cooking utensils). Our name actually comes from one of the many rock formations that litter the moorland hills of Saddleworth.

The Pots and Pans Stone overlooking Saddleworth

Often the name Pots and Pans is used to refer to the obelisk situated nearby at the top of the hill above Uppermill and Greenfield. This cenotaph was erected (not without controversy) in 1923 to honour the 259 people from the villages of Saddleworth who died during the First World War and was located here specifically to be visible from those villages. Each year on Remembrance Sunday (the second Sunday in November) the communities of Saddleworth climb the hill to take part in the remembrance service conducted at the war memorial to commemorate those who died during the two world wars and later conflicts.

pots and pans obelisk overlooking Greenfield Saddleworth

Pots and Pans is actually the name of the large rock (stone) that sits at the top of Aldermans Hill overlooking Uppermill. It gets its unusual name from a series of basins or large indentations on the top of it, worn into the millstone grit over millions of years by the Saddleworth weather.

The pots and pans holes in the Pots and Pans Stone, Uppermill

Pots and Pans is also known locally as the ‘Druids stone’ with the pots and pans-shaped bowls in the top rumoured to have been used to catch the blood from human sacrifices. Legend also has it that water collected from these bowls can cure eye diseases.

Though the geologists don’t agree, the boulders and rocks you’ll see littering the hills above Uppermill and Greenfield are actually the remnants of a mighty battle between two Saddleworth giants called Alphin and Alder.

The giants lived across from each other on the two hills that mark the entrance to the Upper Tame Valley – Aldermans Hill and Alphin Pike. Sadly their friendship dissolved over their rivalry for the love of a beautiful water nymph called Rimon who lived in Chew Brook down in the valley below.

Bench inscription at Dovestones reservoir, Saddleworth

Rimon took a fancy to Alphin, and as is the way with giant/water nymph love triangles – a fierce fight ensued that saw the two giants casting enormous boulders at each other across the valley from their respective hillside homes.

Alphin lost, (he is buried near Giants Rock on Greenfield Moor), and  Rimon, distraught, threw herself to her death from the top of the hill. The Pots and Pans Stone is one of the reminders of that ferocious battle.

Pots and Pans Stone and Obelisk, Saddleworth

Many of the other large rocks and stones scattered across the barren hills of Saddleworth also have names and stories attached to them such as Oven Stones, Sugar Loaf, Dish Stone, Muffin Stones and the Dinner Stones. There used to be more, but many were destroyed for use in the construction of the local locks on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal in the early 19th Century.

There are several reasonably easy walks (and a couple of not so easy ones) up to Pots and Pans. Walking Britain recommends this route to Pots and Pans that starts at the Church Inn in Uppermill. We’ve tried it ourselves, and although it was a bit windy at the top, the views were tremendous!

Bit windy at the top of Alphin hill at Pots and Pans, Saddleworth

Pots & Pans Cottage is perfectly located to take advantage of some fantastic walking opportunities in the area. More details about walking up to Pots and Pans and walking around Saddleworth are available in the information pack at the cottage. We are a dog-friendly cottage, and Saddleworth and the Peak District are a wonderful place for getting outside with dogs.

How a sign for the cottage would look if it were called Chuckle Cottage

When we were shortlisting potential names for the cottage, my daughter (who was three years old at the time) suggested “Chuckle Cottage”, as this was the home of one of her favourite story characters – Little Miss Giggle. She was outvoted 2 to 1, we are a democratic family if nothing else. But it would have made an excellent name. As we are now a family of four perhaps we’ll have a referendum one day.

    Cheers!

  • The Bathrooms

Pots & Pans Cottage in Uppermill, Saddleworth, has two modern and comfortable bathrooms.

The main bathroom is stylish and bright with a heated towel rail and an electric power shower over a proper-sized bath. There is also a Burmese toilet roll holder in the shape of a dog!

The private ensuite bathroom in the second bedroom has a WC, hand basin and shower. Though alas there is no dog in here.

Plenty of lovely fluffy towels are provided.

  • Saddleworth Rushcart

    Saddleworth Rushcart

The Rushcart is held every August, usually on the second weekend after the 12th. In 2027 that should be Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd August, but the date hasn’t been confirmed yet.

This ancient festival involves a cart being dragged through the villages of Saddleworth by teams of Morris Men for two days. This cart carries a stack of moorland rushes around 16 feet tall and weighing around three tonnes when complete,  that are being transported to St Chad’s church in Uppermill, where traditionally they were used as flooring to keep the church warm during the colder months.

Oh, and a Morris man balances on the top for the entire time.

It’s actually a really fun weekend and includes a lot of singing and music, a lot of dancing, with Morris Men (and Women) visiting from all over the country, and there’s a touch of gurning thrown in for good measure.

2026 was the 50th Rushcart since the Saddleworth Morris Men revived it in 1975, and a record 28 Morris sides took part.

The timetable is published nearer the time, but the weekend usually follows the same pattern. On the Saturday the cart sets off from The Commercial (The Commie) in Uppermill in the morning and tours the villages, with dancing in Greenfield, Uppermill, Delph and Dobcross before heading back to The Commie in the evening. On the Sunday it leaves Uppermill in the morning for the Rushcart service at St Chad’s Parish Church at 11am, followed from midday by Morris dancing, the worst singer competition and gurning at the Church Inn and the Cross Keys.

More information about the Saddleworth Morris Men, including the Rushcart timetable when it’s announced, can be found on their Facebook group, or you can email them at saddleworthmorris@gmail.com. The Saddleworth Morris Men perform all over the country and sometimes overseas.

Rushcart weekend books up fast, so if you fancy staying at Pots & Pans Cottage, check the dates early. If the cottage is taken, there are loads of other lovely places in the area, though they do get booked up quickly so you’ll have to be fast. Check out Airbnb and Tripadvisor to see them. There are some lovely log cabins and glamping pods available at Dovestones, and if you’re feeling adventurous then there is a fabulous campsite at Well-i-hole farm in Greenfield.

This is a very important weekend in Saddleworth and one of the events that remind us of our past, and our connection to that past. The continued success of the Rushcart weekend is dependent on the number of visitors it attracts. In these modern times, it is often too easy to forget how important these local community events were in shaping our history, and we should cherish and support them before they disappear completely, to our collective loss. Come down and enjoy the experience!

    Cheers and beers and Rushcarts!

  • Saddleworth Whit Friday Band Contests: A Visitor’s Guide

Saddleworth Whit Friday Band Contests: A Visitor’s Guide

The next Whit Friday is Friday 21st May 2027. The date changes each year, so see our latest Whit Friday update for this year’s news.

‘The greatest free show on Earth’

    What is Whit Friday?

Whit Friday is the Friday after Whit Sunday (Pentecost), so it moves with Easter and falls in late May or early June. In Saddleworth and the neighbouring parts of Oldham and Tameside it is the biggest day of the year: the morning belongs to the Whit Walks and the evening to the brass band contests. The contests go back to Whit Friday 1884, when Uppermill and Mossley held contests alongside the earlier one at Stalybridge, and they have run ever since.

    The morning: the Whit Walks

In the morning the local churches and schools walk in procession through the villages with their banners, usually led by a band, and many come together in Uppermill for a joint service. Roads in many of the villages are closed for the walks from roughly mid-morning until lunchtime, open again for a while, then close from mid-afternoon to get ready for the contests.

    The evening: the band contests

Whit Friday isn’t one contest but a whole string of separate ones, each run by its own village. The Saddleworth and Oldham Whit Friday Band Contests are held in eleven places: Delph, Denshaw, Diggle, Dobcross, Friezland, Greenfield, Grotton, Lees & Springhead, Lydgate, Scouthead & Austerlands, and Uppermill. On the same evening, just over the hill, Tameside runs its own circuit of eleven or so contests, including Stalybridge, Mossley, Dukinfield, Droylsden, Denton, Hyde, Carrbrook and Hurst.

More than a hundred bands take part, from all over the country and further afield. Top bands such as Brighouse & Rastrick, Black Dyke and Grimethorpe play alongside local bands, youth bands and scratch bands. Brighouse & Rastrick have taken the overall Saddleworth title several years running, and the full results are posted on the official results page.

    How it works

Each band plays two pieces: a march, played as they walk up the street to the contest area, and then the contest piece, which is what they are judged on. A volunteer walks in front of each band carrying a board with its name so the crowd knows who’s coming, but the name is never announced. The judges, volunteers like everyone else involved, spend the evening shut away in a caravan or tent (with only the occasional pint for company) and mark each band on the playing alone, not on reputation, fame or fancy uniforms.

There is prize money at every contest, and extra prizes for bands that play at six or more, so once a band has finished it’s supposed to rush back to its coach and on to the next village. Most have a quick beer first before a stressed band leader rounds them up. Between the traffic, the queue of bands at each venue and the beers, most manage a handful of contests rather than all of them. The contests run from about 4pm until late in the evening.

Despite being called the ‘Greatest Free Show on Earth’, it costs a lot to put on. The Saddleworth prize money alone has been around £34,000 in recent years, and the whole thing depends on hundreds of volunteers who work before, during and after the day.

    Chav Brass

One band that always draws a crowd is Chav Brass, a scratch band of very talented musicians from all over the place who get together once a year for Whit Friday. Don’t be put off by the Burberry tracksuits or their unusual choice of marching music: this band can play. Click here to see them play the more traditional ‘Knight Templar’ at Denshaw. They might not be to every traditionalist’s taste, but since the video of them marching at Delph went viral they have brought brass bands and Whit Friday to a whole new audience, and that is no mean feat. For me they sum up what Whit Friday is about: beer, brass and fun.

This is their famous marching performance of DJ Sammy’s remix of Bryan Adams’ ‘Heaven’ in Delph.

    Where I like to watch

Some people try to chase the bands from village to village, but I prefer to find a good spot and stay there. My favourite is the White Hart up at Lydgate, a lovely pub about an hour’s walk from Pots & Pans Cottage (or ten minutes by taxi) and a perfect place to see the bands march in and play. The food is great, the beer is excellent and the views over Saddleworth are amazing. Here’s a snippet of the Lydgate contest to whet your appetite.

It doesn’t get much better than this: a pint of local beer and a bit of brass.

    Tips for visitors

    • Walk if you can. The villages are close together and walking between them is part of the fun. Pots & Pans Cottage is about ten minutes’ walk from Uppermill, and Dobcross, Greenfield and Lydgate are all within walking distance.
    • Expect road closures. Many roads close in the morning for the walks and again from mid-afternoon for the contests, and temporary No Parking zones go up across the area. The official Saddleworth and Oldham Whit Friday website publishes the closure plans.
    • Park wisely, or better still, don’t drive. Parking is terrible, and the traffic wardens treat Whit Friday like all their Christmases rolled into one. You have been warned.
    • Come by train or bus. Greenfield station has trains from Manchester and Huddersfield, and there are buses from Oldham and Ashton-under-Lyne. Services get very busy in the evening.
    • Pick a village and settle in. Most contests have a pub nearby. Uppermill is lively, Delph and Dobcross are hard to beat for atmosphere, and Lydgate has the views.
    • Book early. Accommodation for Whit Friday goes very quickly, and the cottage is usually one of the first things booked for the weekend.

    Brassed Off

The 1996 film ‘Brassed Off’ includes a scene at the Saddleworth Whit Friday contests. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a wonderful film. This clip, filmed in Saddleworth and featuring ‘March of the Cobblers’ (an iconic Whit Friday tune), captures what a glorious day it is.

If you have never been to Saddleworth for Whit Friday, you are in for a treat, and you will get a warm welcome. For Saddleworthians it’s the best day of the year, one they are proud of and happy to share. Even as a ‘comer-inner’ myself (they never let you forget it), I look forward to it every year. Even if you aren’t a big fan of brass band music, it’s a fabulous community day and a great reminder of how special Saddleworth and its people are.

Cheers and Beers and Brass Bands!
    Cliff

This is a lovely place to stay. It’s a a cozy traditional cottage but has plenty of space for two couples. The cottage is kitted out with everything you could need plus nice touches that were unexpected. Cliff messaged to make sure we checked in ok and was very friendly.

We had a wonderful stay at Pots ‘n’ Pans. The location is ideal – quiet yet very walkable to the high street. The cottage is surprisingly spacious and full of character, with lots of momentos from Cliff’s travels in Africa and Asia. The kitchen is very well-equipped – we wanted for nothing. There was even a coffee machine complete with beans. Communication from Cliff, and his manager Kinga, was top notch. Couldn’t have asked for more. We visit the area each year and so hope to stay at the cottage again. Thank you.

We had a fantastic stay at Pots and Pans Cottage. From the moment we arrived, it felt like a true home away from home. It was warm, comfortable, beautifully maintained, and thoughtfully equipped with everything we needed.

One of the highlights of our visit was climbing Pots and Pans. The views from the top were absolutely exceptional and made for a memorable experience. The cottage was the perfect base for exploring Uppermill and the surrounding countryside, and it was always a pleasure to return after a day out.

Cliff was an exceptional host. He communicated clearly before and during our stay, provided helpful recommendations, and made everything easy from start to finish. His hospitality made us feel genuinely welcome.

We would happily stay here again and highly recommend Pots and Pans Cottage to anyone looking for a relaxing stay in a beautiful part of the country.

Great stay at Pots & Pans Cottage. Fantastic location with an easy short walk into Uppermill Centre.

Exactly as described and in a very quiet spot.

We really loved our stay at the Pots & Pans Cottage. I was hoping for an authentic English country cottage and we definitely found it! Fantastic! Comfortable beds, cosy lounge, tremendous kitchen with an especially lovely coffee/espresso machine. The farm-fresh organic milk in the fridge is such a nice touch and the box of chocolate biscuits were equally welcome. Cliff is a wonderful host and very responsive. We had a unique request and he made it happen! The village is great – many options for food and drink – and walkable from the cottage. If we ever get back to this area we will definitely stay here again.

Pots and Pans Cottage is a beautiful cottage ideally located in Uppermill.

The kitchen was beautiful, it had everything you could need.

Upstairs was really comfy, lovely beds and the ensuite bathroom was really appreciated, in addition to the family bathroom.

This provided us a really lovely base for this area.

The host was super responsive too.

Thank you for a great stay.

Beautiful cottage, very well equipped. Loved the huge gas hob and oven. And the coffee bean machine; never used one before and now we’re converts! Such a treat. The beds and pillows were very very comfy, and the cosy sitting room, which was big enough for our lab/retrievers huge dog bed. We all enjoyed our stay and will return in warmer weather, to enjoy the moors. Cliff was THE most amazing host, utterly friendly, professional and very responsive to any queries.

This was our second time staying a Pots and Pans Cottage and we couldn’t wait to check in. We love that it is so close to walk to the shops and cafes and also up to the farms up the hill to view the sheep and wildlife. It is such a cozy cottage and so peaceful and quiet. It is definitely our favorite Airbnb!

Pots and Pans cottage is somewhere I would like to live !! Beautifully decorated with artwork everywhere.. a fully equipped, stylish kitchen diner, cosy lounge with log burner and two double bedrooms, one en suite !

Even though the winter weather was freezing the cottage was very warm at all times

I can’t wait to go back in summer as the location is rural with views of the hills and yet only 10 minutes from the village

Nice cottage, well presented, comfortable and clean. Good to have a parking space. Recommend taking a torch if you’re arriving at night as it’s a short walk around the back of the main buildings to the actual cottage, plus a light helps to enter the combination and open the key box. The heating was on when we arrived (9:30 on a cold, rainy night), which was a blessing. I’ve given 4 rather than 5 stars overall as we did have trouble getting much of a performance out of the shower. There are notices that water pressure is low and some instructions as to how to make it work but we struggled and gave it a miss in the end. everything else was great.

Beautiful, clean, cosy home in a stunning and peaceful location. Cliff was an excellent host, very responsive and helpful, and the cottage had everything we needed. The rooms were laid out perfectly for our young baby and toddler with plenty of room to spare. The area is lovely, plenty to do, and the cottage is easy to find and access. Thank you Cliff!

Great location : perfect peace and quiet with easy access to the surrounding countryside yet within walking distance to the many restaurants and shops in the centre of Uppermill.

Charming cozy cottage with comfortable accommodation. We particularly enjoyed the log burner in the sitting room. We would happily stay again.

    ★★★★★ · Pauline · Airbnb · September 2025

Cliffs cottage was superb. It was spotlessly clean and very cosy. Very good instructions and all in the right places ie not just in a folder. We felt very at home and wished that we were staying for longer. It was only a 5-10 minute walk to Uppermill high st. I would imagine that in the summer the garden would be a lovely place to sit. As I think Cliff points out in his listing not suitable for anyone with mobility issues as stairs steep and when you have big feet like me can be a bit tricky. Really couldn’t fault it

    ★★★★★ · Lynda · Airbnb · September 2025

We loved Pots and Pans Cottage. The decor was charming and we had everything we needed. Beds were very comfortable. The cottage is tucked away at the end of the road so location is quiet but still an easy walk to shops and restaurants. Thanks Cliff 🙂

Absolutely beautiful cottage in the equally beautiful little village of Uppermill . Cliff was a fabulous, very responsive host and provided clear instructions on how to find the cottage. It’s tucked away, which made it feel extra special! The cottage is full of interesting bits that are a feast for the eyes…It’s very quaint with a quirky twist! It’s in a great location, less than a 10 minute walk to the main road that runs through Uppermill, which is lovely. Everyone is really friendly and it’s a haven of great places to eat (I’d highly recommend Abaco for their lovely food, atmosphere and live music) Not forgetting that Dovestone reservoir is only 10 minutes away aswell.

Me and my sisters have had a wonderful few days, thank you Cliff and Pots and Pans

    ★★★★★ · Sally · Airbnb · September 2025

This is a very peaceful cottage with nice terraced garden area and no passing traffic by foot or car. It is well equipped, with a spacious dining kitchen and comfortable living area, with smart TV. The bedrooms upstairs are a good size – one en-suite. The en-suite room has a daybed, which can be super king or two singles. As a super king, it was not that comfortable – I would have it split onto singles if we visited again. This is a unique Airbnb and I advise reading the very accurate description of the cottage (and the parking/access arrangements) before booking it. It is not suited to people with limited mobility or young children – inside or out. The stairs to the upper floor (no downstairs toilet) are very steep and awkward and the levels upstairs change, so you have to be careful when walking around. That said, it is in a great location, with lots of places to visit and walk. More cafes than you will ever need. We had a lovely restful few days and our wee dog loved it.

    ★★★★★ · Dorothy · Airbnb · August 2025

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Pots & Pans Cottage for a short walking break. The area is rich with industrial history and Victorian engineering the canals being the particular draw for me this time

The location is near perfect peaceful & quiet yet within 10 minutes of a wide array of shops, pubs, coffee shops, bars, etc. The cottage itself is a great place and has a relaxing vibe. It is also very well equipped with everything you could possibly need to hand. Comfy bed, great dining kitchen and a really nice living room. I made good use of the outside area with the decking and gazebo too even in the late evening with the lights on. It was nice to have a spot that is sheltered from the wind and the rain.

As a host Cliff is thoughtful and responsive and clearly invested in making sure his guests are looked after. The “Honesty Wine Rack” is a brilliant but simple idea.

I would recommend highly and stay there again if in the area

We stayed here for a quiet getaway mid August. Quirky wee cottage in a hamlet above Uppermill. It is not for everyone – as access inside and out is tricky for people with limited mobility. It is very quiet (no passing traffic on foot or by car) with a terraced garden area. Inside – the cottage is well equipped, comfortable and cozy. Truly dog friendly too, it is great to take your dog somewhere and not find on arrival a long list of things your dog is not allowed to do!! The local area is lovely – plenty of places to visit and cafes/restaurants in the locality.

Second visit to Pots and Pans cottage. As with the first time we found Cliff a very helpful and responsive host. The cottage was once again extremely comfortable and cosy – very charming. Uppermill is a lovely place with lots of nice shops, bars, cafes and wonderful walks along the canal or up to Pots and Pans monument straight from the cottage door. We had a nice meal at Salt restaurant for my son’s 30th birthday. A good time was had by all at our weekend at Pots and Pans cottage. I recommend it to you.

This little cottage in a hidden away hamlet is a perfectly unique gem. Thanks again Cliff & family for a wonderful stay!

We stayed for two nights. I’d had great communication with the owner over wattsapp and email prior and duringour stay. I have family in Oldham but didn’t want to stay in the town. The location was perfect. Close enough to family but on the edge of nature. Quiet, lovely walks, pubs and scenery.

Although we didn’t actually meet anyone, we were made to feel welcome. Touches like fresh cut flowers on the dining table, two pints of milk in the fridge. Logs and kindling available for the log burner. Wine available to purchase on trust. The beds were very comfortable and the place was immaculately clean.. It was a cosy, quirky home from home, full of history, where we could come and go as we pleased. Cook what we wanted, get up when we wanted, unlike a B and B.. I’ll definitely check availability next time we go up north.. 😁

Our stay at Clifford’s cottage was idyllic, cosy and as good as we had hoped. The house is really well located for walks out to the moor, walkable for the town for provisions and eateries and an easy drive to many more local places for sightseeing and adventures. The cottage is really cosy and welcoming, the kitchen was very well kitted out which made cooking very pleasurable. There are little notes helping with everything from the bean to cup coffee machine, the lighting, the water and honesty box bottles of wine. The latter was a particularly lovely touch. The garden is a paradise, I fell in love with the large Japanese Acer tree and we sat on the patio just relaxing in the sunshine every evening. Clifford’s communication was really quick and friendly and he was very helpful when I asked for local information. We would not hesitate to recommend staying in the cottage and would love to come back some time.

Just returned from a lovely stay at this gorgeous cottage. Pots and Pans cottage is really lovely and Clifford is a fantastic host. He really has invited people to stay in a home-from-home – there is everything you could need for a relaxing stay. He has been very generous in leaving plenty of provisions and the interior of the cottage is completely inviting and stylish. The beds were also incredibly comfortable and the black-out blinds and the peaceful location meant that we totally relaxed over the weekend. We lit the woodburner on both evenings with the kindling and logs Cliff had kindly provided. There were fresh tulips in the kitchen and everything was spotless. A very well located cottage, both for local walks and the facilities of Uppermill. However it’s well tucked away and quiet. We didn’t really cook but the kitchen is unusual for a holiday rental because it has everything you could possibly need, so we may return for a longer stay. It’s dog-friendly but they need to walk a short distance on the lead before you get to open ground, which wasn’t an issue for us. Overall a very good place to stay.

Totally homely. We felt so comfortable in the rustic grade II listed old cottage in the hamlet at Shaws. Very warm with the wood burner adding an extra cozy-ness. We cooked a full ‘Christmas’ dinner on the second day which was easy on the range cooker in the well equipped kitchen. Exhilarating walk up pots and Pans hill. Also the walk along the bridal path and back among the canal was nice in the village. On our third night we went for drinks and food in the village – very busy and very nice – lots of options. In short this place was perfect and we would definitely like to come back. Our dogs enjoyed the outdoor space – not enclosed but they are very good dogs that don’t wander. The cottage is very old and querky including the steep staircase but no issue for our party in 30’s and 60’s. Great honesty scheme going with wine which is a nice idea. We met Kinga the house keeper – very bright and bubbly and the house was nicely decorated for Xmas. Fantastic cottage,

I can highly recommend Pots and Pans cottage. The cottage is beautiful with lots of little quirks. The kitchen/dining room was my favourite room. The kitchen had everything you could ever need with a fabulous cooker (didn’t use it as we ate out). Be sure to look at the floor tiles, so cute.

The lounge was very comfortable and a very good size.

bedrooms were a good size and the beds were ok (a bit soft for me but that’s just personal choice). Plenty of towels were provided and the bed linen was clean and fresh.

Bathroom had everything you would expect, plenty of toilet roll provided.

All throughout the cottage was decorated with little artifacts that make it very homely.

There was a couple of points to be aware of. The steps to the bedrooms are very narrow and very steep and both showers had very low water pressure. These aren’t ‘negatives’ just something to be aware of. We absolutely loved our stay 😍

Four of us stayed at Pots & Pans for the Saddleworth Brass Band competition. The cottage has two separated bedrooms and two bathrooms – it was ideal for what we needed.

The cottage was well equipped, tea, coffee, milk and chocolate biscuits!

Cliff was an excellent host, provided us with a lot of information and good recommendations for local restaurants. We chose The Wagon and Dinnerstone.

Would recommend Pots & Pans, it was clean and cosy, with lots of lovely extras.

This was our second visit. We love how it feels home from home. Great instructions and communication with Cliff, always prompt replies. Little touches that make the stay memorable. Flowers in the kitchen. Toiletries in the bathroom. Torches for outings at night. Sundries including tea, coffee and local milk. The log burner makes the sitting room feel very cosy. Uppermill has a lot to offer including the Vault to buy wine, lunch at ‘Saints’ cafe a fab find. Great walks from the cottage along the canal or up on the moor.

We have recently left the cottage after over a month long stay.

Cliff was very responsive and helpful, especially during the booking period whilst we were waiting on insurance companies.

Everything you need is provided, including lovely toiletries and every cooking utensil you can think of!

It was real home from home during a period where we couldn’t stay at our own house and made the situation feel more like an adventure than unsettled.

Thank you to Cliff and family for accommodating us.

Lovely , cozy cottage set in a very peaceful, quiet location. Pictures and description accurately reflect the cottage. Comfortable beds and well appointed kitchen. Cliff was very responsive and even provided extra logs for the (fabulous) log burner, which was much appreciated during the cold week we stayed at the cottage. The only difficulty was the slippery paths to the cottage (due to snow, ice and leaves) and the very steep stair case (these are mentioned in the description). It may not be suitable for the less steady on their feet. Fabulous, comfortable stay, and we may be back!

We absolutely loved Pots & Pans Cottage and the rhubarb pie left for us was a lovely touch. The cottage is a good size and easily accommodated our grown-up family of four, and was the cosiest and best equipped we’ve ever stayed in and was wonderfully peaceful, and the warmth and care Cliff the owner has taken with it really shines through. Uppermill is such a lovely area too. Cliff is a great host for whom nothing was too much trouble and we truly hope to stay again. Beautiful cottage in a beautiful area. Fabulous host and a wonderful experience. Highly recommended. If we could give it six stars, we would!

PS. We have recently returned to Pots & Pans Cottage (late Aug/early Sept 2025) and found it just as delightful as ever. Warm and welcoming and full of character and charm. The perfect place to enjoy early Autumn while within easy reach of Uppermill. Thanks again for the welcome goodies and being such a friendly and accommodating host, Cliff. We hope to come again!

We had a lovely week-long stay at Pots & Pans Cottage. Cliff was friendly, helpful and responsive from the moment we booked. A wealth of information about the cottage and the local area was provided which was very useful.

The cottage is fab, it has every amenity you could want and more, and is cosy and very well kept. Having a cot set up for our baby was no trouble and our dog was equally welcome and catered for with bowls, bedding etc.

The location is also great, a short stroll from the village and an equally easy walk up to the surrounding countryside.

Overall, I would highly recommend Cliff’s place and I’m sure we’ll be back!

We had the pleasure is staying at Pots & Pans for an extended stay of more than 2 weeks. We absolutely loved the place. So warm, so cosy, quiet, peaceful. It’s location is wonderful as it feels like being in the middle of nowhere and yet the lovely village of Uppermill is a few minutes walk away. The cottage really does have everything you need, it is so well equipped especially the kitchen. The beds are very comfy, bathrooms fine and downstairs is the really cosy living room. We ended up with a fairly hefty snow fall a couple of days after we arrived but coped perfectly well once we had stocked up on food and drink and the lovely Aga stove made the cottage really warm as we watched the snow blanket the moors beyond the house. The honesty wine bar is also a lovely touch. If you like to walk then it’s definitely the place for you. We walked most days, mostly setting out straight from the cottage, walking to Pots & Pans, Diggle, Dovestones, Delph and beyond. Cliff is a great communicator, answering any queries quickly and dealing with any minor problems super efficiently, aided by the very helpful and friendly Kinga. We loved it so much we have already booked a return visit.

The kitchen was incredibly equipped with a huge cooking range and coffee machine amongst other equipment. Plus a range of teas and coffees and oils and spices. Huge array of pots and pans -no pun intended. The lounge was comfortable and cosy with the TV having Netflix and Amazon Prime. In the bedrooms the beds were incredibly comfortable . The Wi-Fi was also extremely efficient Cliff has produced a very professional brochure on the cottage and the attractions nearby for reading in the cottage.Every thing that is described is as it actually is. So much information on the area from where to eat and drink to where to take dogs for walks. Uppermill itself is great little place and people very friendly. We all agreed -two parents and two adult daughters (and one small dog ) that this was best holiday cottage we’d stayed in and the information provided by Cliff ensured that the 4 nights we stayed there were really enjoyable. Pots & Pans Cottage is an idyllic rural hideaway in Upper Mill. The cottage is unbelievably beautiful and well-appointed. The coffee machine was a particular bonus, together with the honesty wine bar – much needed as the designated driver at the end of a wedding! The bedrooms are surprisingly spacious for a Saddleworth cottage.

We stayed with my fit and active 83-year-old Father – the stairs were a little steep, however he negotiated them well walking backwards, and we had been well forewarned in the description of the cottage. The final approach road to the cottage is very pot-holed and needs to be approached at very slow speed to save your car’s suspension, but again, we were well fore-warned. The very detailed and accurate instructions for finding the cottage were gratefully received.

Clive is a lovely host – very professional and quick to respond to messages. The communication prior to our visit was faultless – all instructions very clear and exactly what we needed.

I would not hesitate to recommend Clive’s property for a romantic getaway to explore a beautiful part of the UK.

Pots & Pans in Uppermill was one of the best holiday cottages we have used , & we holiday in the UK every 6 months.

We parked the car on arrival on Sunday , & did not use it until we left the following Sunday.

Cliff messaged on the 1st evening to make sure everything was OK , & would always reply very quickly if we had any questions.

Pots & Pans is very homely , comfortable & clean , & it had everything we needed , especially in the kitchen .

The lounge has a very comfy sofa & 2 easy chairs , & it was great to relax & watch the wildlife visit the bird feeder.

The 2 bedrooms are roomy , with very comfortable beds .

The shower in the main bathroom is very good , & wish we had a similar one at home.

We spent about 4-5 hours a day exploring the area & village (small town?) on our dog walks , & there are a variety of walks available right from our doorstep.

Our favourites were the climb up Pots & Pans hill , the walk to, around & back from Dove Stone reservoir.

If we felt less energetic we could walk the Pennine Bridleway which is a few minutes walk from the cottage, & then take a slight detour onto the canal path through Uppermill .

After a long day walking , it was a great feeling to get back to the cottage & get the wood burner going for the evening, relaxing in the warmth & enjoying a beer or glass of wine.

The “honesty” wine rack was a nice touch.

There are lots of dog friendly cafes & pubs , which offer good home cooked food , & our favourite

was the Weaver & Wild coffee house .

    Most shops allow dogs in.

All in all , it was a wonderful week away , & we will definitely recommend it to family & friends.

We will book again in the future , but there are other areas in the UK that we want to experience first.

The one thing to note is that it is a steep road up Shaw Lane to the cottage , but it certainly gets the heart rate up 🙂

Thanks Cliff & his team , including Kinga , who was very helpful.

The Pots and Pans cottage was just a gem. We felt very at home and they had really thought of everything you might need while staying there. I would recommend arriving before dark for the best check-in experience. There’s an issue they’re trying to resolve with one of the shower units tripping the electrical breaker when on high heat and water pressure. It really wasn’t a problem for us, but it could be if you want to take long, very hot showers. Other than that, the place was gloriously quiet with beautiful bird songs in the morning and the walk to the main street of Uppermill was very convenient with tons of shops and restaurants there. We would definitely stay again!

We were lucky enough to book a 5 nights stay here over Christmas, when we came to spend time with our families who live in close vicinity. Being originally from Saddleworth, I felt very fortunate to have found such a beautiful place to stay, especially given that we could bring our dog with us too (lots of lovely doggy walks close by, including a wonderful quiet bridle path).

The place upon arrival was spotlessly clean, and if you are not a doggy person you would not think that this place had accommodated dogs in the past – there was absolutely no trace of previous furry friends staying here! (I am aware some people think cottages that accommodate dogs can be somewhat substandard at times, compared to cottages that don’t – rest assured this cottage is furnished and cleaned to a high standard).

The location is fantastic, situated just on the outskirts of Uppermill in a lovely rural area. Walking into Uppermill took a short 5 minute downhill stroll, and the village has some fabulous shops, pubs and restaurants alongside many scenic walks including along the canal. Pots and Pans Cottage is exceptionally well equipped, with a fabulously large cosy rustic kitchen including a superb range cooker. Throughout, the cottage is furnished with a beautiful eclectic mix of artifacts and pictures clearly representing the owners love of travelling. We considered it also very quirky too, given it is such an old building with lots of history and the layout is such too.

As it was Christmas, the cottage was also decorated to a very high standard for the festive season; even including a real Christmas tree in the lounge. The lounge warm and cosy, with a wonderful log burner for guests to use. It was also nice to arrive to find milk, tea, coffee etc left for us, as well as a wonderful selection of wines to drink (honesty box provided). There was a great coffee machine provided too. Communication between host and ourselves was exceptional, with us even receiving a Christmas card posted to us from them in France! How thoughtful. There is an amazing Guest Information book in the cottage, that explains everything in detail and has ideas on things to do, places to visit etc. Nothing was missed out. We could not have asked for more, and overall were delighted with our stay.

There was just one minor thing that we have since raised with the host after we left and that was in light of there being very little wardrobe space – for most, this would not be an issue as there are drawers to put clothing in. But, given it was the festive season we had brought clothes such as party dresses etc that needed hanging up. This is something we now feel the host will act on, as he is keen for ways of improving the cottage all the time to enable future guests to have the best stay they can.

Overall, we would not hesitate to return again and would highly recommend. You won’t be disappointed. 5*

So close to Uppermill centre and yet peacefully tucked away within walking distance of the town centre. Cliff (the owner) has thought of everything to provide a perfect base from which to explore and the cottage exudes a warm welcome from the outset. I loved the wood burning stove in the lounge. Even bottles of wine with an honesty box should you not bring your own. The latest coffee maker and large retro fridge. The bonus of the cottage garden on a sunny day is a delight . Although visiting an elderly friend, I particularly enjoyed walking the canal paths along the Huddersfield canal and such a wide choice of fun eating places and unique little shops in Uppermill so full of character. What not to like enjoying breakfast outside on a summer day overlooking the canal and a cosy cottage to return to each day. My thanks and appreciation to Cliff the owner for a great stay. Perfect place to explore the beauty of the moors. Cliff is an exemplary host and very attentive – ensuring that we were looked after every step of the way. Instructions throughout – from parking to using the shower – are very clear and exact. This cottage is like a fairytale house, my daughter declared. And indeed it is! My partner agreed when he found the wide range of wine from the honesty bar. The house is full of thoughtful touches and spotlessly clean. Sadly, we didn’t get to enjoy all that was on offer as we were here to see my Mum after a long absence due to Covid – so we only slept and breakfasted. However the cottage is so lovely that my family insist we return to take full advantage of the house and area – we’ll be back! Huge thanks to Cliff😀

Just back from a wonderful stay at Pots and Pans cottage. The location is fantastic, my first visit to uppermill and I was impressed with the choice of bars, cafes and restaurants. The cottage itself was full of everything you need including a really helpful brochure explaining all about the cottage and the local area. Would love to come back again

We had a wonderful stay at pots and pans cottage, the owner was very communicative and the information pack we received before we arrived was very helpful and thorough. Location was great, close to the village, friendly neighbours and very peaceful and quiet. The cottage itself had great amenities and appreciated the thoughtful touches, such as the pint of milk on arrival, the honesty wine rack, books and board games and the helpful notes around around the cottage making everything easy to use. Great coffee machine too! We would definitely stay again, thank you for hosting us!

We had a fantastic little getaway to Pots & Pans Cottage! It’s absolutely beautiful in the cottage, and everything you could wish for is provided, from extra shampoo (which I forgot to bring so was definitely appreciated!), to a local pint of milk delivered upon arrival, to plenty of books to help kick back and relax. Cliff is very responsive and was proactive in communicating to make sure everything was going well. He has also put together an extensive & useful guide book to the cottage which answered all the questions I would’ve had, and gave some tips for where to go in the town for a bite to eat or for a dog walk. Really one of the best Airbnb experiences I’ve had, and if I’m in the area again I’ll definitely return.

We have just returned from a couple of nights at Pots and Pans. We had a fantastic stay at this gorgeous cottage. The cottage is tucked away in a hamlet of weavers cottages and is full of charm and character. There is a lovely wood burner if the evenings are chilly and a little garden to sit in after a day of walking or sightseeing. We made use of both.

Its a pleasant stroll into town where you can buy everything you need for making meals on the range oven.

    We will definitely return

It had everything we needed and was very clean. The cottage also included thoughtful touches such as milk from the local dairy and an honesty wine rack! Cliff was a great host, answered all our queries promptly and was very helpful in telling us the latest COVID-19 restrictions for the area. The village was a great place to explore, with pretty much everything you could need including a deli, grocers, butcher, bakery and post office. Would recommend visiting the Cake kitchen in the high street!!

Thank you Cliff, we really enjoyed our time and would definitely stay there again!!

Pots & Pans Cottage is the perfect home from home. From the moment we arrived we felt cosy and relaxed. The cottage is gorgeous with lovely amenities such as the gas stove in the kitchen and the aga wood burner in the lounge. Tucked out of the way, up a private track, it is silent at night time but just a 10 minute stroll down the hill brings you to the middle of the bustling village of Saddleworth. A wonderful stay – we will certainly be back in the future! Thanks so much Cliff and Family!

Lovely cottage in a great location with a short walk to the village of Uppermill in one direction and the open countryside of the Peak District In the other. We visited in the heat of the Summer and the venue provides a nice balance with having outside areas where you can sun yourself and the stone cottage which remains relatively cool in the heat. The cottage itself is fabulously well equipped and Cliff’s attention to detail makes everything really straightforward. The accommodation is cosy and full of character and it is a great place to get some peace and quiet. There are some lovely attentions to detail such as an “honesty” wine rack and the ability to order quality local produce. Thoroughly enjoyed our break here.

We booked Pots and Pans based on availability (a tad last minute) and the good reviews and couldn’t have been happier. Such lovely touches like the honesty box for a range of fantastic wine, fresh Saddleworth milk in the fridge – a welcome sight for my tea after our 2 hour drive down! Loved the coffee machine, plenty of fresh towels, great master and second bedroom – our 9 year old loved the room and the en suite! Even bird food for guests to fill up the feeders and watch the squirrels squabble and play. The parking is great, easy to leave the car and walk down and back from the high street, which has a good range of cafes, pubs and restaurants for all budgets. The location is great to explore Holmfirth and Oldham, both a short drive away. The cottage is homely, quirky, cosy – I could go on and on – we loved it! Thank you to owner Cliff who sent emails and a great e-guest pack ahead of the trip, very useful 5 stars!!

Do visit the latest coffee shop to arrive in Uppermill – Weaver and Wilde – great coffee and very friendly.

    ★★★★★ · Gabriel B. · Google · December 2019

We stayed at this cottage on what was a very cold, at times damp, few days in December but were so cosy and warm inside, that we did not even light the fire, or we could have been too hot. It was wonderfully clean everywhere and an extremely well-equipped kitchen, which meant we were able to easily cook and enjoy homemade meals. Whilst the cottage had been decorated with a modern twist, it also still very much retains its character. With the directions, we managed to find the cottage easily in the dark, and whilst there is no parking outside the cottage itself, and a little walk up the concrete slabs to the front door, this too is all part of the character cottage which we loved, though would not recommend to anyone who is not stable on their feet, as it can get a little slippy when damp. It was wonderful arriving to find a decorated Christmas tree all lit up inside the cottage, adding that extra homely feeling.

The weather and time of year put us off going out on the hills but we did enjoy walking/geocaching around Dovestone Reservoir (a short drive away) and along the disused railway line walking distance from the cottage itself. However it was not a good idea taking the dog along there at the same time as the Uppermill Santa Run, which had at least 900 people running dressed as Santa, but that was my fault.

The owner always replied to messages quickly and willing to hear feedback (positive/negative, though think you will find it difficult to find any negative), and suggestions of what can be done to make our stay even better. Think what really helps is the owner actually uses the cottage as their own family home when they are in the UK, so if anything had not been working/issues, they would have experienced it themselves and hopefully rectified it before any guests notice. We fully enjoyed the homely feel of this cottage and look forward to returning next year when my husband’s football club (Leyton Orient) next play Oldham/Salford, being the main reason why we chose this area in the first place.

The kitchen is extremely well-stocked with utensils, crockery and coffee-making facilities. Everything about the kitchen is top notch, a great homely feel to it and all you could need to cook for yourself should you wish. The lounge is really cosy and comfortably furnished. Great little woodburner and the hardware shop on the High St stocks kindling and wood, should you need more. The small garden is lovely, with a shelter for sitting out in the (warmer) evenings! Cliff was very helpful via text and email, and it was a bonus to have a cottage that isn’t over-looked by the owner so is nice and private. The website and pre-arrival information are very helpful with lots of tips on places to shop and eat and information about the cottage and parking. Don’t use satnav to get all the way to the cottage, use the pre-arrival information for detailed directions from Uppermill High St as the post-code takes you elsewhere! This is a lovely cottage in a beautiful location. Booking/checking in was easy due to excellent and detailed communication from Cliff. We were visiting the area for a wedding but spent a super wonderful couple of days at the cottage and the surrounding areas too. It is certainly cosy, stylish and super comfortable! The large kitchen area/lounge were great for chatting/cooking/playing games etc, and the beds were perfect too. We would definitely like to come back when we visit the area again.

Myself and my husband had a great stay at Pots & Pans & will be returning in April. Cliff has been great at providing lots of information about the area and the cottage. The cottage is well equipped and has some great pieces of decor. We’ve just returned from our stay and the temperature outside has not been so kind. However, the cottage had no issues with heating and we were very warm and cosy at the coldest time of year. Uppermill Village is a short walk from the cottage and the local Co-op there is open until 11 pm. The location is perfect for what we needed. Highly recommend a stay at Pots & Pans.

Adorable cosy house with loads of fun decor and comfortable beds, great selection of wine for purchase or replacement honour system. We stayed with our 5 year old and 1.5 year old and brother in law and felt it was plenty of space for 3 adults and two kids. Gorgeous house in a stunning part of the world. Great host, Cliff responded quickly and set up stair gate and high chair. Definitely recommend

Very comfortable cottage, beautifully furnished, quiet yet a short walk to the village. We booked the cottage because it was very close to our daughter’s wedding venue, but would love to stay again when we are less busy (and the weather isn’t so wet!) to explore the lovely area around Uppermill.

Exceptionally well-presented property. We found it in pristine condition with all the facilities we could ever hope for. The rooms were all better than the description and we can thoroughly recommend it to anyone planning to visit Saddleworth or the surrounding area.

Pots and pans cottage is an excellent cottage and we were really pleased that we rented it. It is in a great location a short walk from Uppermill which has lots of lovely shops, restaurants and pubs. Upon arrival, we were pleased that the cottage was very clean and tidy. There was also tea coffee and milk so we could have a nice cuppa on arrival! The cottage is very well equipped and has everything you could ever need when cooking etc. They also had an “honesty” wine rack which was a nice touch, which enabled us to have a glass of wine on the first night and replace later. Bedrooms were clean and fresh with plenty of space and storage. The property is within a small hamlet so we bumped into a few of them and everyone was very friendly and stopped for a chat. There is a couple of pubs about 30min walk away which serve good food and also you can walk about 30-45 minutes up a steep hill to “pots and pans plot” which has a war memorial and large boulders and an amazing view. All in all, an excellent cottage which we very much enjoyed staying in and discovering the peak district from.

    ★★★★★ · Tripadvisor · August 2018

Beautiful area, the cottage is furnished to a high level, well equipped, has everything a family requires in a home from home. Very quiet location, not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties or wheelchair user as the pathways are not surfaced evenly, cobbled, this is not a criticism its typical of the area & location, stunning garden, well maintained. The cottage sleeps 4 adults comfortably, 2 bathrooms, one ensuite, large kitchen dining area and a cosy lounge with open fire We will be returning very soon.

    ★★★★★ · Tripadvisor · August 2018

+This property is even better when you see it in person, the pictures of the property just don’t do it justice as the place is perfect in every way possible. The location for visiting the local area is second to none but what make this even better is all of the information that is sent to you by the owner before you go to the property.

Everyone in the immediate vicinity of the property are really friendly and very helpful and once again this makes your stay even more delightful.

If you want a restful and relaxing break then I can certainly recommend Pots and Pans cottage, you will leave this property a totally different person (RELAXED)

I would like to say a big thank you to Cliff not only for having such a property and letting me use it whilst I was away on business, I would also like to say thank you for providing us with all of the information which made our stay one we’ll remember for a very long time.

We spent 3 days at the cottage, it had a very well equipped kitchen and living area. The cottage felt very welcoming and the bedrooms were very comfortable Everything you needed for a wonderful stay was in the cottage. The surrounding area is full of history and the walks are suitable for everyone from walking the moors to more leisurely along the canal. All in all a great stay.

The cottage was lovely and cosy and equipped with everything we needed and within easy walking distance of the village with all its facilities There was great communication and the owner and we would thoroughly recommend a stay there. Hope to be back in the future to explore the area when we have more time.

We have just returned from a weekend stay here. The cottage is in a lovely secluded location in the bustling village of Uppermill. The cottage caters perfectly for families with young children. We have a baby and 3 year old and we loved the toys, DVD’s, and equipment for our little ones. A perfect place to relax and enjoy the countryside.

    ★★★★★ · Tripadvisor · May 2018

A beautiful little cottage, very clean and welcoming. We were delighted to find tea and coffee in the jars and a pint of milk in the fridge! The kitchen was incredibly well equipped with everything we needed plus more. The living room was very cosy with lots of comfy chairs and extra blankets. Beds were all very comfortable, bathroom facilities were great. We had our dog with us who loved the fire in the lounge, the floors downstairs are all hard floors (rugs in the lounge) which meant for easy cleaning after muddy walkies, the garden isn’t fenced off so we had to pop him on a lead to go out but that wasn’t a problem.

The only little niggle we had was that we couldn’t work out the heating, which was probably our own fault but the lovely wood burning stove kept us nice and warm instead so not really a problem.

The pre-arrival communication with Cliff was great, a personalised welcome sheet was emailed out a few days before with all the info we needed. On the day of our departure he emailed again to make sure everything had gone okay which was a really nice touch.

We would love to stay again if we are ever in the area!

This is a very special place. A genuine cozy cottage with all modern amenities. The beds are really comfortable and the linens are lovely. They have wonderful Asian and African art work throughout which adds a unique and warm aesthetic. There is a sweet deck and garden to enjoy the oudoors. We had an amazing time at this house. Its a short walk to the village which has plenty of nightlife with some little shops and cafes. We were fortunate to catch the crafts market at the civic hall. We also walked on nearby footpaths and enjoyed the lovely views.

The host Cliff was great too. Very responsive and genuinely helpful. I would highly recommend this place. Hope to be back next year!

    What a lovely, picturesque escape!

We were here for work in Manchester and wanted to stay out of the city with weekend walking potential and that’s precisely what we got! An easy 12 miles from Manchester (35 mins drive on a good run). Great views from the cottage, lots of long wintry walks and easy access to Uppermill.

Getting snowed in during “the beast from the east” was challenging but what a lovely place to be stuck. One of the neighbours shovelled and gritted up to our front door very thoughtfully!!

All in all, cliff and his local friend have been so helpful and easy to get hold of when needed throughout our months stay.

We hope he will have us back in the summer so we can do it all again in the sun!

    Thanks Cliff and family!

A wonderful place! Uppermill is a lively, small town with great cafes and restaurants. As they are, it also shows that they are all already booked on Saturdays – by locals! So reserve…And Cliffs house is the perfect place to explore Uppermill and the magnificent scenery. Very cozy and tasteful the living room as made for a cup of tea in front of the fireplace after a hike that can start right behind the house. Also my sons – 15 and 17 – liked it very much – We will be happy to come back!

My Husband and I enjoyed our stay at this beautiful cottage. It was a pleasure to stay in with lovely rooms. We dined in one night as we loved staying inside as it felt so cosy and homely. The location is great too as it isn’t far from Uppermill village and the hills are around the back. We got a nice canal walk and a walk up to the nice pub The church Inn while we were there and it was nice to get back to the cottage after. Definitely coming back.

We have had a wonderful stay at Pots & Pans Cottage. A lovely cosy, stylish space – the pictures on Air bnb do not do it justice. Beautifully decorated throughout, wood burning stove, piping hot shower, well equipped kitchen….you get the picture. Cliff sent us loads of useful info, and despite being out of the country at the time, responded quickly to any communication. Highly recommended

We stayed at the cottage before Christmas with our two kids. It’s very cosy, we sat in front of the stove every night in the sitting room. The kitchen is really nice too. Great location, you can get to Uppermill in a few minutes walk where we had lunch/dinner most days. Overall a great stay, highly recommended. The owners couldn’t have been more helpful.

    ★★★★★ · Tripadvisor · January 2018

This is a lovely and welcoming cottage, relaxing to be in, with a cosy sitting room, and excellently equipped kitchen (a joy to cook on the range cooker). The king size bed has a comfortable memory foam mattress, and there are tranquil views of the trees, and the squirrels, to wake up to. The cottage is tucked away on the edge of Uppermill but it’s only a few minutes walk to a whole range of small independent shops, not to mention a good Co-Op which is open every day till late. Good bread at Oliviccio and the Wine Vault (Saturdays). Our favourite cups of coffee were at the Lime Kiln café on the canal by Brownhill Nature Reserve, Station Brew in Greenfield, and at Wooly Knit a mile along the canal in Diggle. It is a lovely area for walking, footpaths everywhere. There is the canal and old railway line if you want flat. If you want up, walk directly from the cottage onto Pots and Pans and the Oldham Way. Or for a grand day out – to Dovestones reservoir, up to Chew Reservoir then along the ridge via Foxstone and Trinnacle back down via Greenfield and Yeoman Hey reservoirs. Whilst we were at the cottage it snowed: we and the dog warmed up quickly after icy walks, snug around the stove in the sitting room. Also crucial: our wet boots and jackets dried quickly!

    ★★★★★ · Tripadvisor · January 2018

Great place to stay. The cottage is full of old world charm but with all the modern facilities. Very comfortable and cosy. Lovely kitchen with all the equipment you need. It’s a few minutes walk to Uppermill a small town with all the amenities you could want, some good restaurants and even somewhere you can while away a wet afternoon painting a pot. The area is full of beautiful scenery so lots of good walking. We had a great time and would thoroughly recommend it.

  • The Bedrooms

    The Bedrooms

Pots & Pans Cottage has two bedrooms. The cosy main bedroom has a kingsize iron bed and plenty of storage space. The room has an open beamed ceiling and a low mullioned window with window seat overlooking the garden. An original feature fireplace is set into one wall, and behind the bed, there is evidence of an old ‘taking-in door’ (now blocked up) that is older than the house.  This is actually on the outside wall of the weaver’s cottage we are attached to and was where the wool was delivered to the weavers.

One recent guest who gave us a five-star rating said she wished she’d booked a third night!

“the main bed was the best bed I have slept on away from home!”

The second bedroom with en-suite can be made up as a double or a twin, depending on your needs. This bedroom has two windows and beautiful views across Uppermill in the valley up to the hills of Saddleworth.

Due to its tucked-away location, there is no passing traffic or night-time noise.  Apart from perhaps the odd sheep or horse in the fields above the cottage, the evenings at Pots & Pans Cottage are wonderfully peaceful.

    Both bedrooms are non-smoking.

The bedrooms have radiators, black-out blinds and various lighting options.

Extra bed linen, blankets, and loads of extra pillows are provided. All bed linens are luxurious 100% Egyptian cotton.

A travel cot with a proper mattress and cotton sheets suitable for babies is available on request.

  • The Garden

    The Garden

The small garden to the side and the rear of Pots & Pans Cottage is a silent haven of peace, and home to numerous birds and squirrels who all congregate at the feeder, with no noise other than the occasional sheep or horse in the fields.

With outdoor furniture and a decked area, the garden is the perfect place to relax (weather permitting), and there is also a cosy gazebo to shelter from the rain.

The garden is planted with mature shrubs and trees and has original stone paths made from Yorkshire stone. There is a small herb garden that you are more than welcome to take advantage of.

The garden is private and peaceful with no passing traffic; however, it is not fully enclosed by a boundary wall, so it is not suitable to leave dogs unattended in the garden.

  • The Lounge

    The Lounge

The lounge at Pots & Pans Cottage is cosy and comfortable, with a low ceiling and mullion windows overlooking the garden so that you can observe the goings on at the bird feeder. The centrepiece of the lounge is the Aga wood-burning stove located in an original inglenook, and the floor is polished oak.

The lounge has a TV with Netflix, Amazon Prime etc. and is also where the wifi box is located that services the whole house. A sofa and two large comfortable armchairs provide ample space to relax. The stairs that lead from the lounge are lined with vintage photographs of Myanmar (Burma) and Uppermill. The lounge walls are decorated in colourful original African artwork, and the Congolese Bantu Chief sits contemplatively by the fire.

In early 2018 Saddleworth was hit hard by a massive snowstorm called “the Beast from the East”. Many of the roads were impassable to the extent that some people were forced to spend the night in their cars up on the M62 in sub-zero temperatures! Our guests at the time, who had travelled to the UK from America, were well and truly snowed in for a couple of days!

“Getting snowed in during “the beast from the east” was challenging but what a lovely place to be stuck.”

They told me that despite the inconvenience, sitting in front of the log-burner in our cosy lounge and watching the snow falling outside was a wonderful break from their work in Manchester, and had a wonderful stay. They gave us a five-star review!

  • The Kitchen

    The Kitchen

The Kitchen at Pots & Pans Cottage is the heart of the cottage that hosts a cosy dining area and a fabulous six-hob gas-fired range with two electric ovens.

One of our recent Airbnb guests said we had an “excellent kitchen with the best oven you will ever find.” Another guest said, “the large kitchen area was great for chatting, cooking and playing games”. Both guests gave us a five-star rating!

The kitchen is fully equipped with all the essentials including a large SMEG fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, kettle, blender, and a fabulous bean-to-cup coffee machine that makes amazing cappuccinos! There is also a DAB radio/Bluetooth speaker. There is everything else you could ever need from pots and pans and a lemon squeezer to gingerbread cutters and a knife sharpener.

The kitchen has open beams and original feature walls. The unique floor tiles were hand-made in Cambodia by a family of artisanal terracotta makers. Each tile is individually crafted, and some are then decorated with imprints of flowers and plants from the family garden; you can even spot tiles that the family dog and chickens have run across. They are beautifully made and fit wonderfully in the kitchen decorated with art and postcards from Myanmar.

We were approached in early 2018 by a company who’d seen pictures of our kitchen on Airbnb. They were impressed with what they saw and wanted to film a breakfast cereal advert in the kitchen at Pots & Pans Cottage! Sadly we were fully booked up during the dates when they wanted to shoot the advert so we couldn’t accommodate them at the time. Maybe next time… assuming we aren’t booked up that is!
