If you are coming to stay at Pots & Pans in the depths of winter, then it is more than likely that you will experience some snow or ice. Pots & Pans Cottage is located about 700 feet above sea level, which is high enough that sometimes the cottage is covered in snow when there is not as much as a snowflake in the village. We do provide a grit bin at the cottage in case the paths need making safe, and the wood-burning stove in the lounge can quickly warm even the coldest toes!
If you are visiting Saddleworth in the Summer, then fear not. Saddleworth in the sunshine is the greatest place in the world! Our garden and the decked area is peaceful and quiet, and perfect for enjoying the long summer evenings.
In late February, early March 2018 the snowstorm labelled the “Beast from the East” hit the UK and caused major disruptions. Saddleworth was severely affected and many of the roads were closed for a number of days. People even slept in their cars up at windy hill at junction 22 on the M62. At 1,221 feet above sea level, it is the highest motorway in the country and gets pretty bleak in the winter.
Some of our guests were snowed in at the cottage for a couple of days during this time. They said that they’d had a lovely stay with lots of “long wintry walks” (they gave us a five-star review!) but they very much appreciated the cosy wood-burning stove in the lounge.
If you do find yourself visiting Saddleworth during the snow, please stay safe, and warm, and don’t take risks on the roads. There are several Facebook groups and local newspapers online, and the Oldham Council website and twitter feed @oldhamcouncil provides local information and updates on the status of the roads.
