Holmfirth Artweek

logo of Holmfirth ArtweekThe Holmfirth Artweek exhibition held in Holmfirth every year is one of the largest open art exhibitions in the UK. In 2022 the event will be held between the 3rd and 9th of July 2022.

The artweek has been running since the mid-1960s, and this little hillside town in the Holme Valley welcomes over 10,000 people every year to view artwork from over 400 exhibitors.

The range of exhibits from local, national, and internationally renowned artists is diverse and includes photographers, painters, textile-makers, ceramicists and sculptors. There are also music, comedy, theatre and literature exhibitions on as well.

All the artwork being displayed is for sale (over 2000 individual pieces), and a commission of 20% is charged on each purchase that is donated to Macmillan Cancer Support. The Artweek has been raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support for 54 years and in 2019 the exhibition raised in excess of £45,000 which meant that they have donated a cumulative total of one million pounds over the years! Incredible!

The main exhibition is held in the Holmfirth Civic Hall with week-long entry tickets costing £2.50, but exhibitions are also held at over 40 Fringe venues across the Holme Valley, Colne Valley, and Saddleworth area. Some exciting and hands-on Children’s Art & Craft Activity Sessions will also be held in Holmfirth during the week.

There are a growing number of  fringe venues that take part in artweek in Saddleworth. In 2019  Scona in Greenfield, Millyard Gallery and the Weavers Factory in Uppermill hosted exhibitions. Details of this years’ fringe venues haven’t been announced yet. For more information about Art Galleries in Saddleworth click here.

Holmfirth is a beautiful little town in the Holme Valley, just a stone’s throw away from Saddleworth over t’ hill in Yorkshire. Most famous as the setting of the long-running BBC comedy TV series Last of the Summer Wine,  there is a lot more to Holmfirth than the octogenarian antics of Compo, Cleggy, Foggy and Co. Holmfirth is where celebrated landscape artist Ashley Jackson has his gallery, and there are lots of lovely teashops (including Sids Cafe) and plenty of restaurants and traditional pubs, and fantastic walking opportunities in the area.
