Shopping in Uppermill

Uppermill is lucky to have a number of shops that sell locally sourced and imported high-quality fresh food products. Despite the parking problems in the village, and the presence of a large Tescos in Greenfield next door, these family-owned businesses continue to provide friendly service and quality products to the local community. They are an invaluable asset to  Uppermill and the surrounding Saddleworth area and should be supported.

Whilst staying at Pots & Pans Cottage, please shop locally whenever possible, Uppermill is very fortunate to have retained such a number of quality fresh food shops. By shopping locally you can contribute to the local economy that supports local employment and local farmers and you can be a part of ensuring that these wonderful, locally owned businesses can continue to prosper for years to come.

Uppermill also has a number of shops selling clothes, handicrafts, books, art and much more. There is a Post Office, two chemists, an opticians and even an independent DIY store.

Please find below a brief description of the local shops that are present in Uppermill, a directory of the shops is included at the bottom also.

Fresh Food

Neil Mellor Butchers

Their shop on New Street in Uppermill offers a selection of the finest locally sourced Beef, Lamb, Pork, Bacon, Gammon & free-range poultry, they also stock a range of locally produced pies.

Pauls Quality Meats

This family-owned butchers have been servicing the Uppermill community on the corner of the High street and New street for nearly 30 years. They supply the highest quality fresh cuts of locally produced meat and also have a wide range of delicatessen items including award-winning pies and cheeses, free-range eggs, Saddleworth honey and muffins or tea-cakes.

JW Buckley Bakers

Buckley’s as it is known locally has been baking bread for over 100 years. This local family-owned bakery serves up everything you could expect from a local village bakery, including freshly baked bread, cakes, pastries, pastries and pies, and proper oven bottom muffins. They also make fresh sandwiches to take away.

Alimentari Di Alberti Greengrocers

This family-run independent greengrocer sells a wide selection of fruit and vegetables many of which are sourced from local growers, with a specific focus on quality and seasonality. They supply many of the local cafes, pubs and restaurants, and offer a free delivery service to all their customers within a 3-mile radius of the shop. Specially selected fruit and vegetable boxes are also available for free delivery at ÂŁ10, ÂŁ15, ÂŁ20 (order on facebook). They also have a range of delicatessen items, fresh fish on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and they also stock a range of magnificent Saddleworth Pies. Alimentari Di Alberti veg-boxes are available to pre-order for guests at Pots & Pans cottage through our online shop, they will be delivered ready on check-in day.

Saddleworth Wine Vault

Opened in 2011, this underground Aladins cave of wine has managed to pack an impressive 400 different wines into their wonderful little cellar shop. They also have a cracking selection of spirits on offer too, and the friendly and knowledgeable team are available to help you select the perfect tipple to suit your taste buds. The family-run shop is a relative of the incredible Wino’s of Oldham who have been selling wines and spirits to the discerning drinkers of Oldham, and restaurants and bars in the local area since 1983.

Every second Sunday of the month a farmers market is held at Saddleworth Museum on the High street. If your stay at the cottage happens to coincide with this monthly market then it is well worth popping along to pick up some excellent locally produced food such as a delicious fresh pie from the awesome Little Saddleworth Pie Company!

One notable mention, not in Uppermill is the family-owned Albion Farm Shop on Oldham Road, Delph, (5-minutes drive from Uppermill). This treasure-trove of tasty delights was established in 2007, though the farm has been in the family since the early 1900s. They have an incredible selection of artisan products, seasonal locally sourced fresh foods and a lovely (always busy) cafe with wonderful views of the Saddleworth area.

Uppermill also has a small Co-op supermarket that sells everything else you can’t find at the local shops. Located on the High street next to the Hare and Hounds, they are open every day from 7 am until 11 pm and are very useful if you need to pick up a pint of milk late at night!

If you are Coeliac or gluten intolerant, I have put together a list of the best places in Uppermill, Saddleworth and the surrounding area to find gluten-free foods.

Uppermill also has a number of cafes, bars, restaurants and traditional local pubs all within walking distance of Pots & Pans Cottage. To find out more information on the eating and drinking offerings in Uppermill, click below to go to the Eating and Drinking page.

Handicrafts and other shops

Authentic

This lovely little shop has recently relocated onto Uppermill High Street near the Granby Arms. They sell a wonderful and eclectic range of high-quality (often quirky) hand-made goods from a number of local artisans and artists. The fabulously named  Woozlewood (who made the awesome sign at the cottage) are based here, they are famous locally for their ingenious bath trays, funky beer trugs and have a wide selection of other unique art and handcrafted wooden items.

Mi Abode sells a fascinating and unique collection of beautiful vintage items and contemporary Scandinavian design pieces collected by the owner on her regular trips back to Sweden. Gifts for all Seasons is a small gift shop that has a deceptively large collection of gifts, cards and locally made seasonal items (this is where my mother-in-law buys all her Christmas decorations!) Hebe Home & Gifts sells a large and often unusual range of cards, gifts, candles and items for your home.

Style and Salvaged at the Reclamation Room Coffee Shop sells an eclectic mix of ethical, fair trade,  handmade and reclaimed items for lifestyle and home. They also serve lovely coffee and fabulous cakes!

Pots & Pans Cottage is a charming L shaped 18th-century weavers cottage located in a small hamlet 10 minutes walk from the centre of Uppermill in Saddleworth.
